Vallenar, Chile Earthquake: 1/30/13
On January 30, 2013 a magnitude 6.8 earthquake on January, 30th struck 43 miles north of Vallenar , Chile at a depth of 26.5 miles. Strong shaking was felt in the city of Vallenar leading to minor damages of building structures. The city of Vallenar is populated with approximately 43,000 residents; fortunately (or unfortunately), only one death related to the earthquake was reported. The event is not directly associated with the same specific fault which caused the famous magnitude 9.5 Chile earthquake of 1960.
